ABOUT
The Rede Cariniana came from the need of creating a network of digital preservation services of Brazilian electronic documents on the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology – Ibict as a way to guarantee its long term success.
The project of implementation of the Network were elaborated based on a decentralised infrastructure, making use of distributed computing resources. A precise distributed digital preservation network of the partnership with the institutions that holds these documents and its infrastructure, in a secure and patronized environment that guarantees the permanent access and monitored storage of digital documents. With FINEP's support, in january 2013 the Institute entered the LOCKSS program of Stanford University.
The Institutes' participation in initiatives such as LOCKSS represents a significative contribution to Brazil's scientific information that, in turn, will enable a publication content in international networks' preservation in institutions that participate in LOCKSS initiative. At first, the activities were made in partnership with 6 Brazilian universities with the support of their respective information and computing centres. The Network structured, at first, the storage service of electronic journals of the project's partner institutions that make use of the OJS/SEER platform.
That was expanded to institutions with free access publications, making so that over 1000 publications were included. The next step has the goal of widening the Network's storage services including the preservation of electronic publications on DSpace software, such as books, thesis and dissertations in electronic format. The activities are being oriented as human resource formation and as a way to ease the automatization of identification, digitalization, storage, validation and conversion automation to new digital formats.
The development of a network of digital preservation services promotes sharing studies and researches as well as integrating digital institutional memory content in a united way.
